About The Garden
Location
Cavell Park Community Garden is located in Cavell Park, at the end of Cavell Avenue, in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.
How It Started
A small group of residents in the St. John's Signal Hill/Battery/Quidi Vidi Road/Forest Road/Quidi Village Area dreamed and talked about starting a community garden in the neighbourhood. After much thoughtful planning, they approached the City of St. John's Parks Department about building a community garden on unused park land. In the spring of 2012, Cavell Park Community Garden opened in the park at the end of Cavell Avenue, off of Quidi Vidi Road in St. John's, Newfoundland.
Where We are Today
There's a garden growing at the foot of Signal Hill, tended by a passionate group committed to creating a space in which to grow food, be physically active, and develop a sense of community.
Today we have approximately 30 raised beds including three specially designed table height beds for adults with limited mobility. The beds are rented on an annual basis to individuals or families who wish to have their own growing space. We also have a few communal beds that we work on together as a team to seed, grow, and harvest.
Because the garden is located in the downtown area which is known to have soil contamination issues, we built raised beds with fresh soil. The garden is a friendly place to visit and learn about how to grow fruits and vegetables in downtown St. John's.
